Privacy Policy
Who we are
ScryTale ("ScryTale," "we," "us") is operated by ScryTale, LLC, a Virginia limited liability company. This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the ScryTale mobile app and this website.
What we collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Account information — email address, username, avatar, and an optional bio (bio is a premium feature), collected when you register or update your profile. We also record your confirmation that you meet our age requirement (see "Children's privacy" below) — a yes/no answer to that question, not a birthdate or other identifying detail.
- Taste and preference data — ratings you give anime, your Seen list, "Not Interested" and "Want to Watch" signals, calibration quiz answers, and head-to-head preference comparisons. This data exists specifically to power your recommendations.
- Usage data — actions like viewing, saving, or rating a recommendation, used to improve recommendation accuracy over time.
- Public profile data (only if you opt in) — see "Public Profile" below.
We also collect technical diagnostic data when the app crashes or hits an error, through our crash reporting provider. An earlier version of this policy said we did not collect this and would disclose it before we started; crash reporting was switched on before that line was updated, and we have corrected it here. What those reports contain is described under "Sentry" below.
How we use it
We use your information to:
- Generate and improve your personalized anime recommendations
- Operate your account and the features you use
- Maintain and improve the reliability of the app
- Communicate with you about your account, when necessary
We do not sell your personal information. Recommendations are never based primarily on what's popular — see our product description for how personalization works.
Who we share it with
We work with a small number of service providers to operate ScryTale:
- Supabase — our database and authentication provider. Your account and taste data are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. Supabase also hosts anime cover images in cloud storage on our behalf; this is catalog artwork, not content you upload yourself — ScryTale doesn't currently offer file uploads for your own account (your avatar is a link, not an uploaded image).
- AniList — the primary source of anime titles, descriptions, and artwork shown in the app. ScryTale is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by AniList.
- MyAnimeList — a backup source for anime data, used where AniList has no entry or cannot answer. ScryTale is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by MyAnimeList.
- Google AdMob — our advertising partner. ScryTale's free tier shows banner ads, and the AdMob SDK starts when the app opens. Like most mobile ad services, it may collect device and advertising identifiers to serve and measure ads. Premium subscribers are not shown ads. This replaces an earlier version of this policy which said advertising was not yet active; the ad integration was added before that line was updated, and we have corrected it.
- Sentry — our crash reporting provider. When the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, we send a report so we can fix it. Those reports carry no account identifier, no email address, no IP address and no screenshots. They do contain: the error and where in the code it happened; details of the device and app, including model, operating system, hardware, language, time zone, and things like available storage and battery level at the moment of the crash; a trail of which screens or requests preceded the problem, with identifiers in that trail replaced before the report is sent; and a randomly generated installation identifier. That identifier lets us tell how many people a crash affected rather than how often it happened. It is not connected to your account, we cannot use it to look you up, and it is replaced if you reinstall the app.
- Future payment partners — a premium subscription is planned and is not active yet. We will update this policy, and name the provider, before it goes live.
We do not share your personal data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Public Profile
Public Profile is off by default. If you turn it on, other ScryTale users can see four things: your Seen list and the ratings you've given those titles, your Top 10, your watch statistics, and The Dossier — a summary of your taste across the nine broad dimensions the recommender scores against, such as action, drama and complexity.
They do not see the detail underneath that summary. Your per-tag preferences, the confidence weightings behind them, and your recommendation history stay private whatever your setting. Your "Not Interested" and "Want to Watch" signals are never shown to anyone, under any setting, regardless of whether Public Profile is on.
You can turn Public Profile off at any time. If you believe another user's public profile (username, avatar, or content) is abusive or violates these terms, use the "Report" action on that profile in the app — it copies privacy@scrytale.app to your clipboard so you can send us the details, and logs that a report was made so we have a record of it. This is an email-based review process, not an automated in-app moderation queue.
Data retention and deletion
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app (Profile → Delete account). This takes effect immediately — your account, taste profile, ratings, recommendation history, and any public Seen list entries are removed, not just hidden from view.
If you can't access your account (for example, you've lost access to your email), you can instead request deletion by emailing privacy@scrytale.app from your registered email address. We aim to complete email-requested deletions within 30 days.
Children's privacy
ScryTale requires all users to be at least 16 years old (see our Terms of Service). ScryTale is also not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact privacy@scrytale.app and we will remove it.
Your rights
You can delete your account directly in the app at any time (see "Data retention and deletion" above). To access, correct, or export your personal data, contact privacy@scrytale.app. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law; we'll honor applicable requests to the extent required.
Security
We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your data, including encrypted connections and database-level access controls that restrict every user's data to that user by default. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as ScryTale evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes, we'll make a reasonable effort to notify you directly.
Governing law
This policy is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
